Global Positioning System Units Now Available for Checkout

The Geography Library now has 3 Trimble Juno ST handheld GPS receivers/field units to lend for your research or mapping project. They circulate to all UW students, faculty, and staff.

The Trimble Juno ST (link: http://www.trimble.com/junost.shtml) is a mapping-grade GPS unit that is WAAS (wide area augmentation system) enabled for 2-5 meter accuracy and uses a Windows CE 5.0 platform. Users can choose between the following installed mapping software to collect spatial and attribute data in the field:

    • ESRI ArcPad 7 with Trimble GPS Correct extension (for differential correction processing to increase accuracy). ArcPad collects data in shapefiles for use in any GIS software.
    • Trimble TerraSync Professional. Data collected with TerraSync must be processed with Trimble Pathfinder Office software or in ArcGIS with the Trimble GPS Analyst extension.

Both of the programs listed above are installed on all Department of Geography computers. The Geography Library has a pod of three of these computers.

To reserve a GPS unit, click on the "Make a Reservation" link above and fill out the equipment reservation form.
